Gangotri - Gaumukh Trek

Home > Treks > Gangotri - Gaumukh Trek   Bookmark and Share

Ganges or Ganga holds great importance to the Hindus. This trek follows the Ganges to its source at the massive Gaumukh glacier, which somewhat resembles the mouth of a cow. ( Gau-mukh implies the cow's mouth in Hindi ). Further up from Gaumukh is Tapovan , a trekker’s paradise and base for many challenging mountaineering expeditions.

This is a easy-medium difficulty trek which can be extended to include Tapovan or Nadanvan. The trek starts from Gangotri ( `Ganga-utri` implies Ganga Descends ), is a town of great religious significance, it is considered that Ganga had finally descended here in the form of the mighty Bhagirathi river, and from here it carries on its long journey towards the plains.

The trek will give a complete experience, right from self supported journey to camping in deep Himalayas. The itinerary is easy paced, and will give ample time to the participants to enjoy the surroundings at leisure.

Detailed Trip Schedule
Day 01
Haridwar/Rishikesh to Harsil - early morning pickup, overnight at Harsil ( camp/hotel ).
Harsil is a very beautiful valley, surrounded by thick pine forests, and overlooked by snow-capped mountains which peek through the various ranges that surround it.
The 8-10 hour journey Rishikesh/Haridwar to Harsil will pass through picturesque sceneries and some main towns of Uttarakhand like Uttarkashi.
Day 02
Harsil to Gangotri (by road) Gangotri to Cheervasa (by trek) -
We will packup early in the morning, and would depart for Gangotri.
Bhagirathi river flows in a narrow gorge here, and is visible only like a thin stream from that height. The drive from Harsil to Gangotri is very beautiful and passes through thick pine forests, and gives very scenic views of valleys below.
After a short visit to the temple at Gangotri, we would embark on the trek. The trek is an easy paced trek and the route is well marked.
Day 03
Cheervasa to Bhojwasa trek - The trek would now become lesser marked, and would pass through beautiful landscapes. There are several landslide/rock slide prone areas here, where one has to be careful of the grazing Ibexes above, which cause most of the landslides. Bhojwasa is named after Bhoj trees which are in abundance here.
The camp at Bhojwasa looks up to the Gaumukh glacier at a distance, and has magnificent views of Bhagirathi series of peaks. The Bhagirathi river here flows with great ferocity and carries large silt deposits in its flow.
Day 04
Bhojwasa to Gaumukh, and back to Bhojwasa Gaumukh is a massive glacier which feeds the perennial Bhagirathi river. It is one of the largest glaciers in the world. The place where it finally opens up to release the water of Bhagirathi is somewhat in the shape of a cow's mouth which is why it is called Gaumukh. This place has a great religious significance, and a dip in the water is considered very holy. We would return to Bhojwasa camp for the evening/night.
Day 05
Bhojwasa to Gangotri trek - We start our return journey, and taking in the last 'eye-fulls' of the sceneries around, we trek back. From Gangotri we would drive back to Harsil. Overnight at hotel/camp.
Day 06
Early morning wind up, lunch enroute, overnight train/public transport to Delhi.
It is possible to extend this trek to Tapovan, or Nandanvan also, as customised trek plan.
